Intrauterine Insemination or Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination, also known as IUI is one of the oldest fertility treatments in the book. Researchers have learned that artificial insemination dates back to the early 1900’s. IUI is also helpful for fertility issues that are a result of sperm mobility problems or sperm count issues too, since the sperm are saved from having to make the long trip to the uterus. IUI is a very simple fertility treatment technique and less invasive than some other treatment methods. Today we are going to explain all the details of IUI for a little better understanding.

Washing sperm

In the beginning of IUI, your doctor will probably start you on a fertility medication near the beginning of your menstrual cycle. This will help to stimulate your egg production and give you a better chance of conceiving.

After figuring out when you will ovulate using an ultrasound or an ovulation prediction kit, your doctor will then decide when it is time to inseminate. The doctor will take a sample of your partner’s semen and then it will be “washed”. “Washing” the semen is helpful to enhancing the chances of fertilization and helps to collect only the best sperm.

Inserting sperm

Inserting the sperm is actually a pretty simple process. It is done using a catheter and is a super short process. A lot of women actually say that it feels a lot like a pap smear. That is that! After a short (30 min) or so waiting period, you are free to go and return to normal day to day activities, and just wait! You have around a 20% chance of getting pregnant with every different cycle of IUI that you go through.

Inexpensive & less invasive

When compared to other fertility treatments methods, IUI is much less invasive and much cheaper too. A lot of couples choose IUI since it allows the natural processes of pregnancy to occur inside your body, without a lot of outside help.

The cost of just the artificial insemination treatments is usually between $300- $700 per cycle. That is just for the treatment and not including the ultrasound, doctor’s visits, etc.. But, all in all, IUI can be a great option for couples who are having trouble conceiving. Talk to your doctor to see if it is a good choice for you!
